EHS rolls out tubeless insulin pump technology for children with Type 1 diabetes

Insulin pumps have existed for decades. But the gap between what the technology can do and what most patients in the region actually receive has remained stubbornly wide. That gap just got a little narrower in Sharjah.
Al Qassimi Women's and Children Hospital, operating under Emirates Health Services (EHS), has introduced the Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System for children living with Type 1 diabetes. It is the first deployment of this technology across any EHS facility, and it signals a meaningful step forward in how the UAE's public health system approaches chronic disease management in younger patients.
The move fits squarely within the UAE's broader push to modernise its healthcare infrastructure. EHS has been expanding its use of advanced medical technologies across multiple specialties, and this rollout reflects that direction. For families managing Type 1 diabetes in a child, the stakes are high and the daily burden is real. A system that reduces that burden while improving clinical outcomes is not a small thing.
How does it work?
The Omnipod 5 is a tubeless, wearable insulin delivery system that communicates with a continuous glucose monitor to adjust insulin doses automatically. Unlike traditional pump systems, it requires no tubing and attaches directly to the skin. The system uses a built-in algorithm to read glucose data and respond in real time, increasing or reducing insulin delivery based on the child's current levels and trends.
