Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi launches cancer biobank to drive personalised treatment research

Cancer research in the UAE just got a significant infrastructure upgrade. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, working with Abu Dhabi Biobank, has launched what is being described as the first initiative of its kind in the country: a dedicated repository collecting blood and tumour tissue samples from cancer patients, with the explicit goal of advancing personalised treatment development.
The programme invites patients at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's oncology centre to voluntarily donate biological samples at various points during their care. Those samples, paired with relevant clinical data, are then stored and made available to researchers working on cancer biology, early detection, and targeted therapies. The scope is broad by design. By capturing samples across different cancer types, treatment stages, and patient profiles, the biobank aims to build a dataset that reflects the genuine diversity of the UAE's population.
How will it work?
Patients who consent to participate provide blood samples and, where clinically appropriate, tumour tissue. These are collected alongside de-identified health information covering diagnosis, treatment history, and outcomes. Researchers, both within Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and through external collaborations, can then apply to access the repository for approved studies. The Abu Dhabi Biobank, which already manages one of the region's more established population health databases, provides the storage infrastructure and governance framework. That existing backbone matters. It means the cancer initiative isn't starting from scratch on data management or ethics protocols.
- Voluntary patient participation with informed consent at each stage
- Collection of blood and tumour tissue samples across cancer types
- Integration with de-identified clinical data for research use
- Governed under Abu Dhabi Biobank's existing data framework
- Open to collaborative research from local and international institutions
Why does it matter?
Personalised oncology, the idea that treatment should be matched to the molecular profile of a patient's specific cancer rather than a population average, is one of the most active areas in global medicine. But it depends on data. Large, well-annotated sample collections are what allow researchers to identify genetic markers, test drug responses across subgroups, and build the predictive models that make precision treatment possible. The Arab world has historically been underrepresented in global biobanks, which skews research findings and limits how well international treatment protocols translate to regional patients. A UAE-based cancer biobank addresses that gap directly. The samples collected here will reflect genetic backgrounds, lifestyle factors, and disease presentations specific to this population.
The context
This initiative fits squarely within Abu Dhabi's broader push to position itself as a life sciences hub. The emirate's health strategy has placed increasing emphasis on research capacity, data infrastructure, and reducing long-term dependence on imported medical knowledge. Abu Dhabi Biobank itself was established as part of that framework, and its partnership with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, one of the region's most prominent tertiary care providers, gives the cancer programme immediate clinical credibility and patient access. So the timing is not accidental. Across the GCC, governments are investing in the kind of foundational health data infrastructure that makes locally relevant research possible. This biobank is a concrete example of that investment taking shape in a clinical setting, with direct implications for how cancer care in the region might look a decade from now.
