Walk for Her turns 19 million steps into 1,900 free mammograms

Nineteen million steps is a lot of walking. Turned into free mammograms, it comes to 1,900 screenings. That is the arithmetic behind 'Walk for Her', a UAE campaign from Aster DM Healthcare that asks a simple question: what if a morning walk could pay for someone else's cancer check?
The initiative is run by myAster, the group's digital health platform, together with Aster Clinics UAE. It began for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and runs throughout October. Every 10,000 steps logged on the myAster app unlocks one free mammogram for a woman. So far, participants have collectively logged more than 19 million steps. Of the 1,900 screenings unlocked, 236 have already been claimed.
That gap matters. Unlocking a screening is easy when you are already walking. Turning it into an appointment is harder. Still, 236 claimed so far shows the model is moving people from awareness to action, at least for some.
Unlocked screenings can be booked through the app at participating Aster Clinics UAE locations until December 31, 2026. That long window gives women time to book well after October ends. Participants can also post their stories and nominate the women they are walking for with the hashtag #WalkForHer.
How does it work?
The mechanics are deliberately plain. Residents sign up on the myAster app or at www.myaster.com, then log their steps. Each 10,000 steps counts toward one free screening. The campaign is hosted only on myAster, so all tracking happens in one place.
Once screenings are unlocked, eligible appointments are booked in the same app. The steps are:
- Sign up on the myAster app or website
- Log steps during the campaign
- Every 10,000 steps unlocks one free mammogram
- Book an unlocked screening at a participating Aster Clinics UAE location by December 31, 2026
The platform already has 2.8 million installs and says it has reached more than 5 million lives. Users can book consultations, order pharmacy products and access preventive-care services. Its Thrive programme offers a 100-biomarker assessment with clinical guidance and personalised recommendations. Aster Care for Her, from Aster Hospitals and Clinics, covers women's health from awareness through screening, early detection and expert care.
Why does it matter?
The World Health Organization calls breast cancer the most common cancer among women worldwide. Around 80% of cases occur in women with no risk factor beyond being female and over 40. In other words, waiting for symptoms or a family history is not a strategy. Between 0.5% and 1% of cases occur in men, which is a reminder that breast health awareness should not be limited to women. Caught early, most breast cancers can be treated successfully.
Nalla Karunanithy, CEO of Digital Health and Omnichannel at Aster DM Healthcare, said the aim is to bring more people into the conversation. Dr. Sherbaz Bichu, Group Chief Operating Officer for the GCC, was blunter about the real obstacle: screening has to be accessible and acted upon in time. He said the campaign brings that first step closer to women, with access to clinical expertise through the wider Aster network if they need it.
That is the right focus. Awareness campaigns are common. Free, bookable screening attached to them is less so, and cost and inconvenience are real reasons women put mammograms off.
The context
Across the GCC, health systems are shifting from treating disease to preventing it. Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia and the UAE's own national health strategies both stress early detection and digital access to care. Apps are where much of that work now happens, because residents already use them for appointments, prescriptions and fitness tracking.
Walk for Her fits that pattern. It attaches a preventive service to behaviour people already have, and it makes the community part of the delivery. One person's steps become another woman's screening.
The test will come after October. If the claimed share of screenings rises well beyond 236, and if women who book are those who had not screened before, the model deserves to be copied by other providers in the region. If not, it remains a good awareness drive. Either way, the 19 million steps are a decent start.
