A thyroid operation with no scar on the neck: the UAE performs its first robotic procedure

For most people, a thyroid operation leaves a mark where everyone can see it. A 27-year-old patient in Abu Dhabi has just become the first in the UAE to avoid that. Surgeons at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) removed part of her thyroid without touching the front of her neck.
The patient, Caroline, came to SSMC with neck swelling that made swallowing hard and gave her a choking sensation while she slept. Tests found a 3-centimetre nodule with abnormal features in the left thyroid lobe, and surgery was recommended. After assessment, the surgical team judged that a robotic approach suited her case.
The operation was a Robotic-Assisted Breast Axillo Insufflation Thyroidectomy, known as RABIT. It took about an hour. Caroline was discharged the following day.
SSMC is a flagship hospital and a subsidiary of PureHealth. It says the technique is well established internationally but new to the UAE. It is offered as an addition to conventional thyroid surgery, not a replacement, and eligibility is decided case by case after a medical assessment.
How did it work?
Conventional thyroid surgery usually means an incision across the front of the neck. In the robotic version, surgeons work through small keyhole incisions in both armpits and reach the thyroid from there. No scar sits where it is easily seen.
A multidisciplinary team planned and carried out the procedure, including surgeons, an anaesthetist and nurses. Dr Salem Al Harthi, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Consultant Robotic/General Surgeon, performed the operation.
The robotic system gives the surgeon a magnified, three-dimensional view of the field. It also filters out hand tremor. That matters in this part of the body, where the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the parathyroid glands sit very close to the thyroid. Damage to either can affect the voice or calcium balance. SSMC also says the approach helps reduce neck discomfort and swallowing difficulties after surgery.
Dr Al Harthi was careful about the limits. "While robotic technology offers greater visualisation and control, selecting the right patient is equally important," he said. That is the honest caveat. Not every thyroid problem suits this route, and the scar is only one factor among several.
Why does it matter?
Thyroid nodules are common, and many of the people who need surgery are young women who may care a great deal about a visible scar. Giving them a choice, where it is clinically safe, is a real gain in patient-centred care.
There is also the question of where patients go. Residents who want newer techniques have often looked abroad. Dr Abdulqader Al Messabi, SSMC's Chief Medical Officer, framed the milestone as access to an additional surgical option "closer to home." Keeping complex procedures inside the country saves families travel costs and keeps follow-up care nearby.
Pricing and wider availability have not been announced. For now, access depends on a patient meeting the clinical criteria at SSMC. Readers should expect that volumes will start small.
The context
This first builds on a programme that SSMC launched in 2020. The hospital has since carried out more than 1,380 robotic-assisted surgeries across several specialties, using internationally trained surgeons and advanced robotic platforms. A thyroid case is a natural next step for a team with that experience.
It also fits a wider pattern in the Gulf. Abu Dhabi has been steadily building its capacity for complex, specialised care, and PureHealth sits at the centre of much of that effort. Across the GCC, governments are pushing to repatriate high-end treatment, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and the UAE's own health strategies. Robotic surgery is one of the clearest ways to show that progress, because it needs capital, training and volume all at once.
The test will come later. Health leaders should watch whether other centres adopt the technique, how outcomes compare with open surgery, and whether training pipelines can keep pace. One scar-free operation is a good start. A dependable service is the real goal.
