XRHealth buys Swing Therapeutics to push digital health beyond VR headsets

XRHealth has acquired Swing Therapeutics, a Boston-based company that makes FDA-authorized digital therapy for fibromyalgia and chronic pain. The deal, announced July 15, 2026, brings Swing's mobile app, virtual clinic, and clinical evidence base into XRHealth's existing platform of augmented and virtual reality health tools.

The move is a clear signal that XRHealth wants to be more than a headset company. By absorbing Swing, it can now reach patients through smartphones, smartwatches, and wearable sensors, not just XR glasses. The combined platform covers physical, cognitive, and behavioral health, with licensed clinicians overseeing care and insurance covering the cost.

Neither company disclosed financial terms of the deal.

XRHealth has acquired Swing Therapeutics and its two main products:

• Stanza, the first prescription digital therapeutic cleared by the FDA specifically for fibromyalgia symptoms. It is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and backed by a Phase 3 trial published in The Lancet, which showed meaningful improvements in pain, fatigue, sleep, and depression.
• Swing Care, a virtual specialty clinic for fibromyalgia and chronic pain that pairs Stanza with medication management, mental health support, and personal coaching. The clinic was built with fibromyalgia specialist Dr. Andrea Chadwick.

Swing Therapeutics was founded in 2019. The company says that after one year in Swing Care, 88% of patients reported improvement in overall wellbeing, with more than half saying they felt "much improved" or better.

Why does it matter?

Fibromyalgia affects around 10 million people in the United States, and it is notoriously hard to treat. There are few specialists, long wait times, and no single drug that works well for most patients. A digital therapy that patients can access through their phone, prescribed by a doctor and paid for by insurance, could reach people who currently get little or no effective care.

For XRHealth, the deal solves a real product problem. VR headsets are powerful clinical tools, but they are also expensive and not practical for daily use by most patients. Adding a smartphone-based therapy means XRHealth can stay with a patient throughout the day, not just during a formal therapy session.

The business case is also worth noting. XRHealth says the platform is reimbursable through Medicare Part B, VA programs, and commercial insurance across 22 states. That is a meaningful advantage in a digital health market where many companies have struggled to get paid by insurers.

The context

Digital therapeutics, software-based treatments that work like drugs but run on screens, have had a rocky few years. Several high-profile companies collapsed after failing to secure insurance reimbursement. Pear Therapeutics, once seen as a leader in the space, filed for bankruptcy in 2023 after payers refused to cover its products at scale.

What makes the XRHealth and Swing combination different, at least in theory, is that it combines FDA authorization, clinical trial data, and an existing reimbursement pathway in one package. Stanza's FDA De Novo authorization and its Lancet-published trial give it a level of clinical credibility that many digital health products lack.

The broader trend here is consolidation. Digital health startups that built narrow, single-condition tools are finding it hard to survive on their own. Larger platforms that can bundle multiple conditions, devices, and care models into one reimbursable product have a structural advantage with health systems and insurers. XRHealth is clearly betting that being the biggest and most comprehensive platform is the right strategy, even if it is still early days for proving that out at scale.
