Saudi Arabia completes 11 remote robotic surgeries in a milestone for telemedicine in the Arab world

One of the procedures performed was only the second remote pulmonary lobectomy ever conducted anywhere in the world. That fact alone should stop healthcare professionals in the region in their tracks. Saudi Arabia's Seha Virtual Hospital has now completed 11 consecutive remote robotic surgeries, with surgical teams operating from Riyadh while patients received care in Hail and other locations across the Kingdom. This is not a pilot project or a proof of concept. It is a functioning clinical program, and it is already expanding.
The program brought together Hail Health Cluster, King Saud University Medical City, telecommunications provider Zain KSA, and EDGE, a robotics and solutions company represented locally by Al-Amin Company. The procedures covered a wide range of surgical complexity, including a right lower lobectomy, sleeve gastrectomy, hernia repair, pelvic exploration, and hysterectomy. In total, the 11 surgeries represent a meaningful body of clinical evidence that remote robotic surgery can work safely at scale.
How did it work?
Before any patient entered the operating room, the program went through extensive clinical, technical, and simulation-based testing. Teams verified both the equipment and the readiness of medical and support staff at both ends of the connection. The robotic systems used in the procedures have received approval from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, meaning they cleared a formal regulatory process before any clinical application began. This is important. It separates this program from experimental efforts conducted outside standard oversight frameworks.
The operations ran through an integrated network that Seha Virtual Hospital is now expanding to include multiple sites across Saudi Arabia, including areas that have historically had limited access to specialist surgical care. The framework governing all of this is the "Saudi Protocol for Remote Surgery," a national reference standard launched by Seha Virtual Hospital to regulate how robotic interventions are conducted, documented, and evaluated across regions.
Why does it matter?
The geographic challenge in Saudi Arabia is real. The Kingdom covers 2.15 million square kilometres, and specialist surgical capacity has traditionally been concentrated in major urban centres. Remote robotic surgery directly addresses that gap. A patient in a secondary city or rural area no longer needs to travel to Riyadh for a complex procedure. The expertise travels instead.
But the significance goes beyond logistics. Completing the world's second-ever remote pulmonary lobectomy means Saudi Arabia is not just adopting technology developed elsewhere. It is contributing to the global evidence base for what remote surgery can achieve. That is a different kind of ambition, and it aligns with where Vision 2030's Health Sector Transformation Program is pushing the Kingdom: toward a system that is both accessible and internationally credible.
The context
Seha Virtual Hospital has been one of the more ambitious health infrastructure projects to emerge from the Vision 2030 period. It was designed from the outset to distribute specialist clinical capacity, not just teleconsultation, but active intervention, across the Kingdom. This robotic surgery program is that model taken to its logical conclusion.
Across the GCC, there is growing investment in telemedicine infrastructure, AI-assisted diagnostics, and digital health records. The UAE has pursued similar goals through its national unified medical record system and hospital digitisation programs. But remote robotic surgery at this level of complexity is rare anywhere in the world. So the question for regional health systems watching Riyadh is straightforward: how quickly can they build the infrastructure, the regulatory frameworks, and the clinical partnerships to do the same?
The Saudi program suggests the answer does not require decades. It requires a clear protocol, the right partners, and a willingness to test rigorously before going live.
