Emirates taps Parsys for the new onboard telemedicine kits

Flying at 35,000 feet, a medical emergency can quickly turn into a life-or-death situation. But what if cabin crew had access to advanced technology that could instantly connect them to medical experts on the ground? That's exactly what Emirates and Parsys Telemedicine have achieved with their groundbreaking inflight telemedicine station.

With a hefty $2.4 million investment, Emirates is rolling out this cutting-edge system across 300 aircraft, ensuring that passengers receive immediate, high-quality medical care in the air. This isn't just about technology; it's about saving lives when every second counts.

How does it work?

The new telemedicine station is a game-changer. Here's how it operates:

  • Onboard Medical Kit: Cabin crew use a compact, high-tech Parsys Telemedicine Kit, which includes a pulse oximeter, thermometer, blood pressure monitor, glucometer, and a 12-lead ECG.
  • Real-Time Data Transmission: Instead of jotting down readings, medical data is sent via Bluetooth to the Medcapture© device, a tablet preloaded with Emirates' customized medical software.
  • Instant Ground Support: The system connects directly to Emirates' 24/7 Ground Medical Support team in Dubai, allowing inflight crew to receive expert medical advice in real time.
  • Live Video Consultations: In certain cases, doctors on the ground can visually assess a passenger's condition using the tablet's high-definition video feature.
  • Secure Cloud-Based Platform: Medical data is transmitted through the Parsys Cloud, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations while enabling swift communication.

Why does it matter?

Medical emergencies don't wait for landing. A passenger experiencing a cardiac event mid-flight needs immediate intervention, and this system bridges the gap between the sky and specialized care on the ground.

  • Speed & Accuracy: No more relying on handwritten notes or vague symptoms. Precise, real-time readings allow doctors to make informed decisions quickly.
  • Reduced Diversions: Emergency landings are costly and disruptive. With expert support in real time, flights can often continue safely to their destination.
  • Passenger Reassurance: Knowing that expert medical help is a button-press away provides a sense of security for travelers, especially those with pre-existing conditions.

It's already making a difference. On a recent flight to Lyon, France, an elderly passenger suffered a cardiovascular emergency. Thanks to the telemedicine station, the crew relayed real-time vitals to doctors on the ground, who guided them through the life-saving procedures.

"The system enabled faster, seamless coordination, ensuring the passenger received the best possible care," Emirates reported.

The context

This isn't Emirates' first foray into inflight medical care. The airline has always equipped its aircraft with top-tier medical tools, but this collaboration with Parsys takes it to another level.

Cabin crew undergo rigorous training before ever stepping onto a plane. New recruits endure eight weeks of intensive instruction, covering everything from CPR and AED use to emergency childbirth assistance. Training continues annually, ensuring crew remain prepared for any scenario.

Beyond technical skills, Emirates also prioritizes the human side of medical emergencies. Crew members are trained to show empathy, communicate clearly with passengers and their families, and even break difficult news when necessary. And after particularly distressing incidents, Emirates ensures its own crew receive psychological support through its Employee Assistance and Peer Support programs.

Ultimately, this is move is not just about innovation — it's about making sure every passenger, no matter where they are, has access to life-saving expertise when they need it most.
