EHS enhances pulmonary tuberculosis detection with AI

Imagine a world where deadly diseases are spotted with near-perfect accuracy in the blink of an eye. That future is already here in the UAE. Emirates Health Services (EHS) has supercharged its diagnostic capabilities by rolling out artificial intelligence (AI) in its Medical Examination Centers for Residency.

The mission? To detect pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with lightning speed and unmatched precision — all through routine chest imaging.

How does it work?

EHS's AI-driven system scans chest X-rays, identifying TB with pinpoint accuracy.

Before AI, detection was about 80% accurate. Now? A staggering 98%. The technology processes imaging in under a minute, slashing the time radiologists need to finalize reports. Faster results mean earlier treatments, and earlier treatments mean better patient outcomes.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Naqbi, Acting Executive Director of the Supportive Health Services Sector at EHS, highlights the impact: "This technology enhances testing accuracy to 98%, improving the ability to intervene swiftly and deliver healthcare that meets the highest standards."

Why does it matter?

  • Speed saves lives: The faster TB is identified, the quicker treatment begins, reducing complications and preventing the disease from spreading.
  • Radiologists get a helping hand: AI lightens the load by automating routine screenings, allowing specialists to focus on complex cases.
  • UAE leads in digital health: By integrating AI into diagnostics, the country solidifies its reputation as a global innovator in healthcare technology.
  • A step toward sustainability: AI streamlines processes, making healthcare more efficient and accessible while supporting long-term health goals.

Beyond the numbers, it's about real people getting the right care at the right time. "Digital innovation is a cornerstone for enhancing the sustainability of health services and realizing the UAE's future vision in this crucial sector," says Dr. Al-Naqbi.

The context

Tuberculosis remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, particularly in regions with high population mobility. The UAE, as a global hub, is proactive in mitigating health risks associated with TB. With this AI-driven system, EHS is not just improving individual patient outcomes — it's protecting entire communities.

This initiative is more than a technological upgrade. It's part of a broader vision to align with global best practices, enhance healthcare sustainability, and cement the UAE's status as a leader in digital health innovation. By embracing AI, EHS is setting a benchmark for how modern healthcare should operate: fast, accurate, and always one step ahead of the curve.
