UK NHS speeds up AI rollout to cut waiting times and free doctors from paperwork

The NHS is accelerating the rollout of artificial intelligence tools across England, with two headline changes: an AI triage tool in the NHS App that directs patients to the right service, and AI notetaking software that handles clinical admin so doctors and nurses can spend more time with patients.

The announcements are part of a wider plan for how the NHS will spend £10 billion on technology, digital, and data systems over the next three years. That money was allocated by the government last year, and NHS England says it expects the investment to deliver £41 billion in total benefits over the next decade.

The changes come as the NHS continues to struggle with long waiting lists and staff burnout from administrative overload. AI tools that have been tested in trials are now being pushed out nationally, with the goal of making a measurable difference to both patients and clinical staff.

What's the news?

NHS England has set out its priorities for the £10 billion tech investment. The two most immediate changes are:

  • AI triage in the NHS App: After a successful trial, a new tool will ask patients a series of adaptive questions about their symptoms and direct them to the most appropriate service, whether that's a GP, a pharmacy, A&E, or self-care advice. It reached more than 200,000 patients during the trial phase and will be available to all NHS App users by April 2028.
  • AI notetaking tools: Also called ambient voice technology, these tools record conversations between patients and clinicians, then generate real-time transcriptions and clinical summaries. The national rollout starts with outpatient appointments, where pilots have already shown strong results.

The AI triage tool was first tested at a GP practice in Sussex. The result: a 29% drop in patients queuing on the phone, with no drop in patient satisfaction. Clinicians at that practice say the tool hasn't replaced their judgment, it's given them time to use it better.

On the notetaking side, a pilot at St George's Hospital in Tooting found clinicians saved an average of 47 minutes per shift, enough to see one additional patient every shift. The rollout is now expanding to four NHS trusts across south-west London: St George's, Epsom and St Helier, Croydon, and Kingston and Richmond. Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust are also expanding their programmes to more than 3,000 clinicians.

Beyond these two priorities, the £10 billion plan also includes:

  • A Single Patient Record so specialists across the NHS can see a patient's full medical history
  • Virtual hospital appointments through the NHS App via a new service called NHS Online
  • Digital tools to help patients manage rehabilitation for heart and lung conditions
  • New systems to help staff manage both urgent and planned care
  • Stronger cyber security for patient data
  • Access to Microsoft Copilot for more than 500,000 NHS staff, after a trial found it cut admin time by an average of two days per month

Why does it matter?

NHS waiting lists have been a political flashpoint for years. At the same time, staff retention is a serious problem, with administrative burden frequently cited as a key reason doctors and nurses leave or reduce their hours.

A major study led by Great Ormond Street Hospital, published last year, found that AI notetaking tools freed up clinicians to spend nearly a quarter more of their time with patients. Scaled nationally to over 11,000 A&E clinicians, the researchers estimated that could create space for more than 9,000 extra A&E consultations every single day. That's a significant number, and it comes without hiring a single additional member of staff.

The AI triage tool addresses a different but equally familiar problem: patients don't always know where to go, and a large number of GP appointments are used by people who could have been helped elsewhere. By directing patients to the right service from the start, the tool aims to reduce unnecessary GP appointments and ease pressure on practices that are already stretched.

If these tools work at scale the way they've worked in trials, the NHS could meaningfully improve capacity without a proportional increase in headcount or cost.

The context

The NHS turning to AI is not surprising. Health systems around the world are under pressure from aging populations, rising demand, and constrained budgets. AI tools that reduce administrative work or help triage patients more efficiently have attracted serious investment from health services in the US, across Europe, and in Australia.

What's notable here is the scale and the speed. The NHS is one of the largest single-payer health systems in the world, with tens of millions of patients and hundreds of thousands of staff. Rolling out AI tools at this scale is genuinely difficult, and past NHS tech projects have a troubled history of delays, cost overruns, and failed implementations.

The government and NHS England are clearly aware of that history. Statements from NHS England Chief Executive Sir Jim Mackey and Health Secretary James Murray both emphasize prioritizing what has already been proven to work, rather than committing to unproven technology. The focus on expanding pilots that have already delivered results, rather than announcing brand new systems, reflects a more cautious approach than some previous NHS tech strategies.

The involvement of Microsoft, through the Copilot rollout to 500,000 staff, also reflects a broader industry trend. Tech companies are competing hard for long-term contracts with public health systems, and the NHS is one of the most attractive clients in the world, both for the scale of the opportunity and the credibility a successful NHS partnership provides.

Whether the £10 billion investment delivers the promised £41 billion in benefits will depend heavily on implementation. But the early trial results give the NHS more reason for optimism than it's had on technology for some time.
