Active Abu Dhabi launches the WALK1000 initiative

The WALK1000 initiative, launched by Active Abu Dhabi in partnership with Emirates Foundation and PureHealth, aims to promote health, fitness, and community engagement across Abu Dhabi.
Started on November 2, this ambitious campaign is backed by the Department of Community Development - Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Police, and the UAE Ministry of Defence — with sponsorship from major organizations like Mubadala, Ali & Sons, Al Masaood Energy, Aldar Properties, Space42, and EDGE.
WALK1000 aims to be more than a physical challenge - a celebration of culture, heritage, and the collective spirit of Abu Dhabi.
How does it work?
At the heart of WALK1000 is a 1,000km trek across Abu Dhabi, mirroring the effort of completing 24 marathons. Ten dedicated athletes, including Mansour Al Dhaheri and Faisal Alketbi, will embark on this journey, averaging 33km daily and passing significant cultural, historical, and environmental landmarks. The walk begins at Al Sila, winds through the Liwa desert, passes Jabel Hafeet, moves to Al Ain, and concludes at Al Wathba.
For those who prefer shorter goals, community members can join the challenge by completing 6,000 steps daily through PureHealth's Pura app, making fitness accessible for everyone.
Why does it matter?
WALK1000 is more than just a physical test; it's an initiative aimed at fostering a healthier and more connected Abu Dhabi community.
His Excellency Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation, highlighted the initiative's importance, saying, "Our purpose is to inspire the Abu Dhabi community to elevate their holistic health and be part of a happier, healthier, and more cohesive society."
By encouraging even small, incremental steps toward fitness, WALK1000 brings attention to how physical activity can improve quality of life and contribute to a healthier society.
The context
Abu Dhabi's rich heritage and cultural landmarks provide a meaningful backdrop for this event. The route is carefully planned to pass through sites of historical, environmental, and technological significance, from the Baynounah Houbara Bird Sanctuary to Al Sadeem Observatory. These locations reflect the emirate's commitment to preserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable resource management, and advancing scientific research.
As Shaista Asif, Group CEO of PureHealth, put it, "We believe we can foster healthier lifestyles, strengthen our communities, and ultimately improve overall wellbeing."
