Future Samsung smartwatches might track glucose levels without needles

Samsung is preparing a new feature for its future Galaxy smartwatches, a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring feature — according to a recent report from Bloomberg.

"If we can do continuous blood pressure and glucose, we're in a whole different ballgame," Hon Pak, Samsung's mobile digital health chief, said in an interview. "I think that's where everyone is trying to get to. We're putting significant investment toward that."

Samsung presumably wants the new capability to improve its device health features. The South Korean tech giant recently teased the Galaxy Ring, featuring activity and sleep-tracking functionalities, with more health features likely to arrive in the future.

At present, most glucose checks involve a skin puncture for a blood sample. Meanwhile, Apple has been rumored to be working on a non-invasive method for over a decade. Now rivals feel the burn as Apple cranks up the pressure for some worthy competition.

If Samsung manages to pull this off, it is a game-changer — especially for people living with diabetes who juggle glucose level checks. But it's not an easy thing to do, and the company is apparently experimenting with different solutions to nail down pinpoint accuracy.

The non-invasive glucose reading tech, however, will have to wait for at least five years — and in the meantime, Samsung will look to expand its health data offering for users by exploring sensors all over the body to dish out more insights.

Meanwhile, we expect to see the debut of the Galaxy Watch 7 sometime later this year. The rumors suggest it will have a new CPU, this time made by Samsung, and an updated WearOS from Google. Hopefully, some other useful features will be included, as well.
