Yoga, Pilates and mindfulness classes coming to Meta Quest 3

The movement and mindfulness brand Alo Moves is bringing its award-winning on-demand wellness platform to mixed reality (MR) exclusively for Meta Quest 3 later this year!

Developed by Magnopus of Mission: ISS fame, the Alo Moves app uses volumetric capture for peak immersion. Lifelike representations of instructors will guide users through every movement and moment in a series of yoga, Pilates, and mindfulness classes. And thanks to room mapping and object detection, users will be able to practice safely as they get the studio experience from the comfort of their homes.

How will it work?

Alo Moves will include MR movement and mindfulness classes with 3D instructors. Quest 3 users will be able to master the moves with a volumetrically captured virtual instructor as well as a 360-degree "mini-instructor," who can be viewed from all angles and placed anywhere in view to help them perfect their poses.

These classes will take place in an environmental portal anchored within a physical space, giving users access to stunning views like mountain vistas and coastal scenes.

In addition, the app will include access to the extensive library of existing Alo Moves classes.

Users will benefit from exercising with renowned instructors and enjoy yoga with Ashley Galvin and Annie Landa (aka Annie Moves), Pilates with Bianca Wise, audio-guided meditations with Kirat Randhawa, and soothing sound baths with Susy Markoe Schieffelin. There will be an option to walk around with these instructors to view each pose from any angle, just like in an in-person class. With low-impact classes spanning five to 24 minutes, Alo Moves easily fits into any daily routine.

Alo Moves launches on Quest 3 later this year.

On the record

"Alo Moves has always been motivated by a single goal: to inspire mindful movement and meditation," said Alo Moves General Manager Natasha Trindall. "Partnering with Magnopus and Meta allows us to leverage cutting-edge MR technology to create a truly immersive wellness experience. MR has the potential to break down geographical barriers and inspire a wider audience to prioritize their well-being through movement and mindfulness in a way that cultivates lasting practices."

"Developing Alo Moves MR app was a truly inspiring project because it allowed us to push the boundaries of what's possible in the VR fitness space," added Magnopus Director of Virtual Production AJ Sciutto. "Volumetric capture was the clear choice for the instructors. It allows us to create life-sized, 3D figures with incredible detail. This level of immersion fosters a deeper connection and provides a much clearer understanding of movement, especially for beginners."

The context

In recent years, virtual and mixed reality has been used in mindfulness training, and this approach has been found applicable and useful as a remote training approach.

Last year's review suggests that using VR in mindfulness training can be effective in improving mental health in adults compared with non-VR mindfulness training. Specifically, it mentioned the beautiful natural scenes contained in VR-based mindfulness training as an assistance.

In that sense, we can see the future for apps like Alo Moves to find their audience among the Meta Quest 3 users and beyond. Furthermore, we'll likely have more to report on in the coming months. Stay tuned.
