Walgreens launches $49-per-visit weight management program

Walgreens just entered the weight loss market with a new twist. The pharmacy giant launched Walgreens Weight Management, charging patients $49 per visit instead of requiring monthly subscriptions like most telehealth services.
The program targets adults aged 18-64 who plan to pay out of pocket for GLP-1 medications like Wegovy. It's available in 28 states and connects patients with licensed doctors and nurse practitioners through video visits.
How does it work?
Patients start with an online video consultation where healthcare providers review their medical history and weight loss goals. If eligible, doctors can prescribe FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight management.
The service includes follow-up support through chat or video between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Central Time, seven days a week. Patients can send prescriptions to any pharmacy they choose.
Walgreens also expanded its Rx Savings Finder tool to include discounted Wegovy pricing. The new rates start at $149 monthly for tablet forms and $199 for injectable versions.
Why does it matter?
Most weight management telehealth services require monthly subscription fees on top of medication costs. Walgreens' pay-per-visit model could save money for patients who don't need frequent check-ins.
The timing matters too. Less than 25% of employers covered GLP-1s for weight loss in 2025, according to KFF survey data. This leaves many patients paying full price for both consultations and medications.
"We're helping eligible patients take meaningful steps toward better health, on their own terms," said Rick Gates, Walgreens' Chief Pharmacy Officer.
The context
Walgreens is playing catch-up in digital healthcare. Companies like Ro, Calibrate, and Found already offer weight management services, but most charge monthly fees ranging from $99 to $199.
The pharmacy chain has been expanding its Virtual Healthcare platform as it faces pressure from online competitors and changing patient expectations. Weight management represents a growing market as GLP-1 medications gain popularity.
The service launches in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
