Vodafone shares Egypt digital health progress

Vodafone Business is making significant strides in transforming Egypt's healthcare sector by rolling out digital solutions across the country. Currently, more than six million patients are benefiting from services implemented in 314 hospitals.
With the aim of reaching 26 million citizens in the coming years, Vodafone Egypt's digital transformation initiative is one of the largest efforts to modernize healthcare in the country. This ambitious project seeks to reduce inefficiencies in healthcare management and improve patient care by transitioning hospitals to electronic systems.
How does it work?
Vodafone Egypt's healthcare digitalization plan focuses on two major initiatives: supporting the Universal Health Insurance (UHI) program and modernizing university hospitals.
The UHI project is designed to provide high-quality healthcare services for all citizens. To achieve this, 314 hospitals have adopted digital systems such as electronic health records (EHRs) and online payment systems, replacing traditional paper-based methods. A key tool in this transition is the Hospital Information System (HIS), which centralizes the management of patient records and hospital operations, ensuring more efficient care and administration.
In addition, Vodafone has been working on the digital transformation of university hospitals. This initiative started with Ain Shams University in Cairo, where HIS has been implemented across 12 teaching hospitals. As a result, these hospitals have drastically improved operational efficiency and patient care by reducing reliance on paper-based processes.

For example, Ain Shams University's teaching hospitals have seen patient waiting times reduced by 32%, and re-admission rates dropped by nearly 63% following the adoption of HIS. Furthermore, the university hospitals have collectively saved over 50 million Egyptian pounds by switching to integrated digital services. Such results underscore the importance of digitalization in improving both the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.
The context
Egypt's healthcare system faces challenges common to many growing and aging populations, including overburdened facilities and inefficient administrative processes. Vodafone Egypt, part of Vodafone's African subsidiary Vodacom, is addressing these issues through digital transformation. The company's nationwide initiative to modernize healthcare aligns with global trends where digital technology is increasingly seen as a solution to improve healthcare accessibility and efficiency.
This initiative in Egypt is part of Vodafone's broader efforts in healthcare across multiple countries. For instance, Vodafone Business is also working with Frankfurt University Hospital in Germany to deploy a dedicated 5G network, enabling better connectivity for healthcare staff and patients. This experience helps Vodafone bring global expertise to its projects in Egypt, ensuring the solutions implemented are both innovative and effective.
