UAE health ministry launches innovation lab to tackle chronic diseases

The UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention has created an Innovation Lab to develop new ways to prevent chronic diseases. The lab hosted brainstorming sessions focused on high-impact ideas that could help people adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce national chronic disease rates.
Senior officials attended the Dubai event, including Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum from the Ministry of Sports and Hussain Al Rand from the health ministry's Public Health Sector. National experts and specialists from health organizations across the country joined the discussions.
The initiative supports the 'We the UAE 2031' vision, which aims to build an advanced healthcare system that improves quality of life and promotes healthy living across society.
How does it work?
The lab brings together national and international expertise to create practical solutions for fighting non-communicable diseases and mental health issues. Participants discussed major challenges related to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and chronic respiratory conditions.
The sessions examined global best practices that could work locally. Discussions focused on promoting physical activity across all age groups and building partnerships between health and non-health sectors, following a 'Health in All Policies' approach.
The ministry plans to use advanced digital technologies to improve monitoring and follow-up. These systems will integrate risk factors with health information systems and create data-driven analytics to support decision-making. Digital initiatives will also target tobacco reduction and encourage healthy behaviors.
Why does it matter?
Chronic diseases create a growing burden on both community health and the healthcare system. The ministry is taking a proactive approach based on innovation, partnerships and collaboration across sectors to address root causes of these conditions.
The lab's outcomes will provide a blueprint for future programs and integrate into the ministry's strategy. This creates a comprehensive public health model centered on preventive policies, awareness programs and stronger partnerships.
'The lab was dedicated to translating accumulated knowledge and global best practices into actionable solutions,' said Dr. Buthaina Bin Belaila, Head of the Non-Communicable Disease and Mental Health Department. The goal is making healthy choices the easiest and most accessible options for people.
The context
The Innovation Lab reflects the ministry's commitment to prevention as a strategic choice that makes the healthcare system more sustainable. The approach aims to reduce lifestyle-related risk factors like poor nutrition and tobacco use.
Recent findings from the National Health and Nutrition Survey are informing new preventive initiatives. The ministry is working with partners to expand early screening programs, health education and create healthier food environments.
The broader goal is building a healthy, aware and empowered society capable of embracing positive lifestyles. This approach is designed to ensure long-term success in fighting non-communicable diseases and protecting future generations' health.
