Qatar hospital performs country’s first private sector robotic ureteral reconstruction

The View Hospital in Doha has performed Qatar's first robotic proximal redo ureteroureterostomy in the private sector, completing a complex urological reconstruction that sets a new standard for minimally invasive surgery in the country.

The procedure involved reconstructing a blocked ureter - the tube connecting the kidney to bladder - in a young male patient whose kidney function was deteriorating after failed previous treatments. The robotic-assisted surgery took 70 minutes and the patient went home just 36 hours later with fully restored urinary flow.

How did it work?

The patient had struggled with recurring blockages in his upper ureter following earlier laser stone treatment and an unsuccessful laparoscopic reconstruction. Despite multiple interventions, the obstruction continued, causing his kidney function to decline progressively.

The surgical team chose robotic reconstruction after comprehensive evaluation showed significant kidney compromise. The procedure faced major challenges:

  • Dense scarring around the ureter from previous surgery
  • High location of the stricture making access difficult
  • Need for precise, tension-free reconstruction

Dr. Ihab Abutabanjeh, the consultant urologist who performed the surgery, used robotic magnification and enhanced precision to complete the delicate reconstruction. A follow-up scan at two months confirmed unobstructed drainage and preserved kidney function.

Why does it matter?

Robotic ureteroureterostomy offers significant advantages over traditional open surgery for complex reconstructive cases. The technology provides surgeons with enhanced precision and visualization, making it possible to perform delicate repairs even when extensive scarring complicates the procedure.

The benefits for patients include:

  • Reduced surgical trauma compared to open surgery
  • Faster recovery times
  • Earlier return to normal activities
  • Better functional outcomes in challenging redo cases

"Robotic surgery has transformed how we manage complex ureteral reconstruction," Dr. Abutabanjeh said. "It allows us to operate with exceptional precision, even in redo cases with extensive scarring. Most importantly, it enables excellent functional outcomes while offering patients a faster and smoother recovery."

The context

This procedure represents part of a broader push by Qatar's private healthcare sector to adopt advanced surgical technologies. The View Hospital is positioning itself as a center of excellence capable of handling the most complex cases with leading-edge equipment.

"This procedure is a reflection of where The View Hospital is heading, building a center of excellence where the most complex cases can be treated with the most advanced technology available," said Dr. Fatih Mehmet Gul, Country Chief Executive Officer of Apex Health Qatar. "We will continue to push boundaries and raise the bar for surgical care in Qatar."

The success comes as robotic surgery gains traction across the Middle East, with hospitals investing in the technology to attract patients seeking minimally invasive options for complex procedures. Qatar's focus on becoming a regional healthcare hub makes these surgical milestones particularly significant for the country's medical tourism ambitions.
