Qatar and Canada explore health-tech partnerships ahead of major investment summit

Qatar's business community is exploring new investment opportunities in health technology with Canadian partners, as the two countries deepen their economic ties in the medical sector.
The Qatari Businessmen Association (QBA) hosted a Canadian delegation from the Canadian-Qatari Business Forum (CQBF) in Doha this week. The meeting included representatives from various health sector companies and focused on potential partnerships in medical innovation and research.
How will it work?
The partnership will center around a formal cooperation protocol between the QBA and CQBF. This agreement aims to:
- Share information and expertise between Canadian and Qatari companies
- Support knowledge transfer initiatives in health technology
- Create strategic partnerships in priority sectors for both countries
The discussions are building toward a larger Investment Summit scheduled for September 16, 2026, which will run alongside the Canadian Investment Summit in Toronto. Philippe Couillard, Chairman of CQBF, called the Doha meeting "a consequential landmark" in preparing for this major event.
Why does it matter?
This partnership reflects Qatar's broader strategy to become a leader in medical technology and scientific research. The country is actively seeking international partnerships to:
- Combat chronic and serious diseases through advanced technology
- Improve healthcare service quality
- Enhance overall quality of life for its population
For Canadian health-tech companies, Qatar represents a significant market opportunity in the Gulf region, with substantial government backing for healthcare innovation projects.
The context
The meeting comes as Gulf countries increasingly invest in healthcare technology as part of their economic diversification efforts. Qatar has been particularly active in this space, viewing health-tech as a key sector for reducing dependence on oil revenues.
Canada has established itself as a major player in medical technology and pharmaceutical research, making it a natural partner for Qatar's ambitions. The Canadian delegation's first-ever visit to Doha signals both countries' commitment to expanding their economic relationship beyond traditional sectors.
Executive Director of CQBF Yasser Dhouib noted that the meetings show "a real desire on the part of the Canadian and Qatari sides to give the required momentum to scientific and medical cooperation."
