Oura smart ring gets new features for expecting moms and perimenopause

Pregnancy is both ordinary and extraordinary: billions of women have lived it, yet each journey feels singular. For many, it's a mix of awe, uncertainty, and endless "is this normal?" moments. That's the gap Oura, the maker of the Oura Ring, wants to close with its new Pregnancy Insights feature across Oura Ring Gen3 and Oura Ring 4.

"Pregnancy is one of the most physiologically significant events in many members' lives," says Neta Gotlieb, PhD, Staff Product Manager for Women's Health at Oura. With this redesign, Oura is promising not just another pregnancy tracker, but a guide powered by biometric data and grounded in science.

How does it work?

Opt into Pregnancy Insights, and your Oura Ring starts surfacing metrics that matter most during pregnancy — temperature trends, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate. Instead of raw numbers, you see patterns and ranges, along with weekly science-backed explanations about what's happening in your body.

Key features include:

  • Gestational Age Tracker: Three simple rings show where you are by trimester. Weekly insights explain what's changing.
  • Symptom Tagging: Track habits, moods, or experiences — from heartburn to Braxton Hicks contractions — using 35 new tags designed specifically for pregnancy.
  • Reference Ranges for Vitals: Developed with fertility specialist Eleni Jaswa, MD, your personal data is contextualized against broader pregnancy norms.
  • Educational Content: Weekly, bite-sized lessons cover sleep, fitness, and mindfulness.
  • Pregnancy-Aware Oura Insights: Readiness, Sleep, Rest Mode, and Recovery Mode all shift to account for gestational changes. Even Oura Advisor, the AI-powered companion, adapts to your new reality.

As Dr. Gotlieb explains, "Learning about what's normal, knowing what to expect from the maternal body, and understanding that daily fluctuations are common can offer much-needed reassurance in a time of uncertainty."

Why does it matter?

Pregnancy is often painted as a neat arc — first trimester sickness, second trimester energy, third trimester heaviness. But reality is messier, with wide swings in symptoms and vitals. That's where real-time, personalized data can be a lifeline.

By showing you patterns rather than anomalies, Pregnancy Insights turns what could feel alarming into reassurance. For instance, a spike in resting heart rate may feel scary, but seen in the context of pregnancy norms, it's simply a sign of your body doing its job.

The tool also gives women back a measure of control — over their data and their decisions. Every tag, every trend is private and user-controlled, an important reminder in an era when reproductive health data is a sensitive topic.

The context

Pregnancy tracking isn't new. There are countless apps offering due-date calculators, baby-size metaphors ("your baby is the size of a mango!"), and community forums. What sets Oura apart is its ability to bring continuous biometric monitoring into the picture.

The ring doesn't just log symptoms you report — it tracks the unseen shifts, like micro-changes in heart rate variability or body temperature. Layer on authoritative medical frameworks like those of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and you get a more rigorous, trustworthy tool.

Oura's framing of trimesters, for instance, follows ACOG's definitions:

  • First trimester: conception to 13 weeks, when organ development is underway.
  • Second trimester: 14 to 27 weeks, a period of rapid growth.
  • Third trimester: 28 to 40 weeks, when organs mature and the fetus prepares for birth.

Even the way Oura calculates gestational age — starting from the first day of your last period, not conception — reflects standard medical practice.

This is less about reinventing pregnancy and more about rethinking how women can see and understand it: through their own bodies, in real time, with data that makes sense.
