Morocco launches ‘AI Made in Morocco’ to build local artificial intelligence sector

Morocco has launched a new program to build its own artificial intelligence industry from the ground up. The 'AI Made in Morocco' initiative wants to create a national innovation ecosystem that encourages locally designed AI solutions.

The Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform announced the program during a scientific seminar at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez. The focus is on AI applications in advanced manufacturing and healthcare technologies.

How will it work?

The initiative centers on establishing the Al-Jazari Institute of Industry X.0, which will connect universities with industry partners. Multiple government ministries signed the founding agreement during the seminar:

  • Ministry of Industry and Commerce
  • Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform
  • Ministry of Economy and Finance

Academic partners include major Moroccan universities like Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Moulay Ismail University, and Al Akhawayn University. The institute will anchor Morocco's national AI network and coordinate research efforts across the country.

Why does it matter?

Morocco sees AI as a strategic driver of economic and industrial transformation. The global AI market is growing fast - from about $189 billion in 2023 to a projected $4.8 trillion by 2033.

Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco's Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administration Reform, emphasized AI's role in the country's economic modernization. The program specifically targets two key sectors:

  • Industry X.0 (advanced manufacturing)
  • Health technologies

The context

This initiative is part of Morocco's broader Digital Morocco 2030 Strategy, which puts artificial intelligence at the center of the country's long-term economic and technological development. The strategy aligns with King Mohammed VI's national vision to integrate digital innovation into Morocco's economic modernization.

The program comes as countries across North Africa and the Middle East are investing heavily in AI capabilities to diversify their economies and compete globally in emerging technologies.
