MoHAP announces mandatory genetic testing as part of premarital screening for Emiratis

Starting January 2025, the UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) will require all Emiratis planning to marry to undergo mandatory genetic testing as part of the premarital screening programme. The initiative aims to enhance the health and well-being of Emirati families while positioning the UAE as a leader in healthcare innovation.

How will it work?

The genetic testing process is integrated into the premarital screening programme and focuses on identifying potential genetic mutations that couples may carry. By analyzing 570 genes associated with over 840 medical conditions, the testing can detect risks of genetic diseases that could be passed on to future generations. This allows couples to make informed decisions about family planning, armed with precise medical insights.

The programme operates under MoHAP's leadership, in collaboration with key health authorities — including the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services, and Dubai Health. It also draws on partnerships with academic, medical, and technological experts to provide state-of-the-art testing and reliable results.

Why does it matter?

This initiative represents a paradigm shift in the UAE's healthcare approach by prioritizing preventive measures over-reactive treatments. The context

This initiative stems from a decision by the Emirates Genome Council, approved during the UAE government's annual meetings. It forms part of the National Genome Strategy, which seeks to establish an integrated national genetic database. The database will play a crucial role in identifying genetic diseases among Emiratis, allowing for early and effective medical responses.

MoHAP has worked tirelessly to ensure the programme's readiness, assembling a unified national team that includes specialized medical staff, advanced technical infrastructure, and comprehensive guidelines.
