Eight Sleep hits $1.5 billion valuation with new funding round

Eight Sleep just raised money at a $1.5 billion valuation, led by Tether Investments. The sleep technology company plans to use the cash to move beyond sleep optimization into something bigger: predictive AI that spots health problems before they occur.

The company had a strong 2024, reaching positive cash flow while launching three new products and expanding to 34 countries. Two peer-reviewed studies showed their Pod device reduces menopausal hot flashes by 56% and restores natural sleep temperature rhythms.

What's the news?

Eight Sleep is shifting from reactive sleep tracking to predictive health monitoring. Their current Pod device tracks biometrics like sleep stages and heart rate, then adjusts temperature and elevation in real time. The new approach will anticipate problems before they happen.

The company is building an AI agent that simulates thousands of scenarios - warm rooms, late exercise, big meals, high stress - and optimizes the sleep environment before users even get into bed. Early tests show nearly half of participants changed their daily habits based on the AI's recommendations.

Eight Sleep is also pursuing FDA approval for sleep apnea detection and treatment. Getting cleared would transform their Pod from a wellness gadget into a regulated medical device.

Why does it matter?

This represents a major shift in how health technology works. Instead of reacting to problems, Eight Sleep wants to prevent them entirely. The approach could change how we think about healthcare - from treatment to prevention.

The FDA angle is particularly important. Medical device approval would let Eight Sleep screen and treat conditions at scale, potentially reaching millions of people every night. That's a much bigger market than wellness products.

The company also sits on a massive dataset:

  • Over one billion hours of real-world sleep data
  • Users in 35+ countries
  • Continuous biometric monitoring during sleep

This data advantage could be hard for competitors to match.

The context

Eight Sleep operates in the growing sleep tech market, competing with companies like Oura and Whoop. But most competitors focus on tracking and insights. Eight Sleep actually changes your sleep environment.

The company's products are used by Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc, tennis player Taylor Fritz, and other professional athletes. Fast Company named it one of the most innovative companies three times.

The new funding will go toward:

  • R&D for predictive AI models
  • Clinical trials and regulatory work
  • Global partnerships in key markets

CEO Matteo Franceschetti says sleep was just the starting point. "What we're building doesn't exist yet - a system that understands your body better each night and acts on that knowledge," he said.
