Egypt’s largest diagnostic lab installs the first Siemens FLEXLAB-X automation track in the Middle East and Africa

Al Mokhtabar, Egypt's biggest diagnostic laboratory brand, has installed a FLEXLAB-X total lab automation track from Siemens Healthineers at its central facility in Cairo. The company says it is the first installation of this specific system anywhere in the Middle East and Africa.

The track is now live inside what Al Mokhtabar calls its Mega Lab, a central processing facility that supports a network of more than 460 branches and roughly five million patient visits a year. The lab already holds College of American Pathologists accreditation, a standard it has maintained for 15 consecutive years and the only Egyptian lab to do so.

The move is part of a broader push by Al Mokhtabar's parent company, Integrated Diagnostics Holdings (IDH), to automate more of its testing workflow and reduce the time between a sample arriving and a result reaching a doctor.

How does it work?

The FLEXLAB-X is a connected conveyor and processing system that moves samples through the lab without human handling at most stages. Here is what the installed system can do at Al Mokhtabar's Mega Lab:

  • Process up to 30,000 samples and 87,000 individual tests per day
  • Return results in an average of 32.4 minutes, well below the lab's own internal target of 120 minutes
  • Store more than 25,000 samples in automated refrigerated units after testing
  • Retrieve and reuse a stored sample in under 30 seconds if a doctor orders an additional test, with no need to take a new blood draw from the patient

The system also uses artificial intelligence to monitor the mechanical condition of its own devices, predict faults before they cause downtime, and run statistical checks on results to flag anything that looks out of range before it reaches a clinician.

The range of tests the system handles is wide. It covers clinical chemistry, immunoassays, oncology markers, cardiac biomarkers, thyroid function, liver disease, multiple sclerosis indicators, and infectious disease testing.

Why does it matter?

Speed is the obvious win here. Cutting average turnaround from a 120-minute target to just over 32 minutes is a meaningful change for doctors making time-sensitive decisions, particularly in cardiology and oncology where early results can change a treatment path quickly.

The automated sample retrieval feature also has a real patient benefit. If a doctor orders a follow-up test after seeing an initial result, the lab can pull the original sample from cold storage and run the new test without calling the patient back in for another blood draw. That reduces inconvenience and speeds up the diagnostic process.

For Al Mokhtabar, the capacity numbers matter too. At 87,000 tests per day, the system gives the lab room to grow without adding proportional headcount or floor space. The company says the track can scale as demand increases.

The context

Lab automation has been accelerating across the Middle East over the past few years as health systems in the region try to manage growing patient volumes with flat or limited staffing budgets. Installing high-throughput automation at a central hub and feeding it through a branch network is one of the more proven models for doing that at scale.

Al Mokhtabar's approach, centralizing complex testing at one highly automated facility while keeping a large branch network for sample collection and routine results, mirrors what several large European and Asian lab groups have built over the past decade. The FLEXLAB-X installation is a step toward that model becoming standard in North Africa.

Siemens Healthineers is one of the largest medical technology companies in the world, with around 74,000 employees and revenue of approximately 23.4 billion euros in its fiscal year ending September 2025. Winning the first FLEXLAB-X placement in the Middle East and Africa at a lab with Al Mokhtabar's scale and accreditation status is a useful reference point for the company as it competes for further contracts in the region.
