Egypt presses Orange Group to join digital health expansion as tech investment deepens

Orange Group has committed to training 200,000 Egyptians in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, allocated €25 million for AI-focused startups, and pledged to equip Egyptian universities with technology laboratories. That's a significant package. But the Egyptian government wants more.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Orange Group CEO Christel Heydemann in late September, alongside Communications Minister Raafat Hendy and senior Orange executives for the Middle East, Africa, and Egypt. The meeting covered telecommunications cooperation, digital skills, and technology investment, but the sharpest ask from the Egyptian side was direct: join the second phase of the national digital health project.

Al-Sisi called on Orange to contribute to that second phase specifically in digital infrastructure, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and systems integration. He also urged the group to scale up training programmes that prepare young Egyptians for jobs in AI, data analytics, and cloud computing, including through internationally recognised professional certifications delivered via global technology partners.

Orange's announced commitments include the 200,000-person training initiative, the €25 million startup fund targeting AI and advanced technologies, and laboratory installations at a number of Egyptian universities. Heydemann said Orange's Egypt work could act as a reference model for other markets across the region, particularly in Africa.

Saudi Vision 2030 and the UAE's various health and AI strategies have pushed regional ambitions higher and raised expectations for what technology partnerships should look like. Orange has a long-standing presence in Egypt and the wider Middle East and Africa region. Its involvement in digital education and smart platforms gives it credibility beyond pure connectivity. But the move to position Egypt as a model for African markets is notable. It suggests Orange sees the country not just as a local market, but as a proof-of-concept for a broader regional and continental strategy.
