Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has recently announced a new set of standards aimed at regulating oncology services in Dubai's health facilities. The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Emirates Oncology Society, aligns with Dubai's Healthcare Strategy 2026, which aspires to create a pioneering healthcare system and establish Dubai as a leading destination for high-quality healthcare with excellent patient outcomes.

How does it work?

During a workshop held at the Raffles Hotel in Dubai - DHA, along with Professor Humaid Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Oncology Society at the Emirates Medical Association, introduced these new standards. The standards were crafted based on UAE legislation and the best international practices. Attendees included strategic partners and representatives from healthcare facilities offering oncology services in Dubai.

Dr. Marwan Al Mulla, CEO of the Health Regulation Sector at DHA, emphasized the global challenge of providing oncology services and highlighted the initiative's goal to build an effective system that offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Why does it matter?

Dr. Marwan Al Mulla highlighted the importance of a robust regulatory framework in fostering the growth and development of the healthcare sector in Dubai and the UAE. The new standards aim to create a competitive environment, encouraging healthcare providers to offer high-quality, specialized oncology services in line with international best practices. This will significantly enhance Dubai's position as a leading healthcare destination both regionally and globally.

Dr. Hanan Obaid, Director of Health Policies and Standards at DHA, stated that the standards focus on patient-centered care, incorporating regulations and requirements related to medical care, patient safety, and performance metrics for measuring the effectiveness of oncology services. These evidence-based standards are designed to improve the therapeutic experience for patients and elevate the quality of services provided.

The context

Dr. Khulood Al Sayegh, Head of the Standards and Guidelines Section at DHA, emphasized the workshop's focus on implementing the new standards for oncology services. The workshop underscored the importance of continually updating these regulations to keep pace with advancements in oncology, highlighting precise diagnostic services, the integration of multispecialty care, and the prioritization of patient outcomes and quality of life.

The workshop also addressed the significance of providing value-based, effective, and cost-efficient care, ensuring the sustainability and accessibility of these vital services. Additionally, it focused on developing oncology services to meet future needs and challenges in patient diagnosis and healthcare services, incorporating technologies and smart solutions in patient care programs.
