Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performs first simultaneous robotic kidney transplant for donor and recipient

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 group, recently performed a groundbreaking simultaneous robotic kidney transplant using a single robot for both the donor and recipient. This innovative procedure marks the first of its kind at the facility, highlighting Abu Dhabi's growing reputation as a global leader in healthcare technology and organ transplantation.

The achievement, made possible through a collaboration with experts from Cleveland Clinic in the United States, demonstrates the region's commitment to integrating cutting-edge science and technology to improve patient care and outcomes.

How does it work?

The simultaneous robotic kidney transplant involves using a sophisticated robotic surgical system that precisely mimics a surgeon's movements with enhanced control and precision. The robot provides 3D vision, high magnification, and superior ergonomics, enabling minimally invasive surgery through smaller incisions than traditional methods. This approach reduces blood loss, minimizes trauma, and promotes faster patient recovery.

The procedure was meticulously coordinated, with a team of surgeons performing the operations in separate operating rooms simultaneously but using the same robot, seamlessly transitioning from the donor to the recipient.

Why does it matter?

This simultaneous robotic transplant represents a significant leap forward in organ transplantation. It showcases the potential of robotic surgery to enhance patient outcomes by reducing recovery times, minimizing surgical complications, and improving precision during complex procedures.

As Dr. Bashir Sankari, Institute Chair, Urology, Surgical Subspecialties Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, noted: "Our innovation in attempting the robotic donor and recipient transplant with the same robot stemmed from a patient's interest, as many are aware of the positive outcomes that robotic surgeries yield."

This milestone also reinforces Abu Dhabi's position as a hub for medical innovation and excellence, demonstrating the effectiveness of international collaboration in advancing healthcare standards.

According to Dr. Rashed Obaid Alsuwaidi, Executive Director of the Healthcare Workforce Planning Sector at the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, "It is important initiatives and achievements like these that further cement the emirate's position as a leading global healthcare destination."

The context

The successful execution of such a complex surgery reflects the region's commitment to excellence and innovation in medical care, backed by world-class infrastructure and an exceptionally skilled healthcare workforce.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has been at the forefront of robotic surgery in the region, having previously conducted seven successful robotic-assisted donor surgeries. As the first multi-organ transplant facility in the UAE, the hospital plans to expand its use of robotic technology beyond kidney transplants, exploring possibilities for other types of organ transplants, such as liver transplants, to benefit more patients. This forward-looking approach, combined with ongoing collaboration with Cleveland Clinic in the US, positions Abu Dhabi as a leader in advanced medical care and innovation.
