AI could predict type 2 diabetes 10 years in advance?

Imagine being able to predict type 2 diabetes up to a decade before it manifests. Researchers at Imperial College London have developed such an AI tool — the AI-ECG Risk Estimation for Diabetes Mellitus (AIRE-DM) — designed to identify individuals at risk of type 2 diabetes up to 10 years in advance. By leveraging artificial intelligence to analyze routine heart scans, this innovation could revolutionize preventative care and help millions avoid the complications associated with diabetes.
How does it work?
AIRE-DM operates by analyzing electrocardiograms (ECGs), a common and non-invasive test performed during heart scans. Using data from around 1.2 million ECGs from hospital records, the tool was trained to detect subtle changes in the heart's electrical activity that might indicate a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The researchers further validated the tool with data from the UK Biobank, demonstrating its ability to identify early risk factors long before blood sugar levels become abnormal.
Dr. Libor Pastika emphasized the accessibility of this technology, stating: "By offering a cheap, accessible, non-invasive way to predict type 2 diabetes risk early, AIRE-DM could open up a new window of opportunity for more targeted, preventative care."
