Abu Dhabi University opens new fertility research lab with clinical partner

Abu Dhabi University has opened a new reproductive medicine research lab in partnership with FertiClinic Fertilisation Group. The facility brings together university researchers and fertility specialists under one roof at the university's Abu Dhabi campus.
The partnership gives students hands-on access to clinical fertility research while creating a platform for joint research projects between academics and practicing doctors. This type of collaboration is becoming more common as universities seek to bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world medical applications.
How will it work?
The FertiClinic Reproductive Research Lab sits within ADU's College of Health Sciences and includes three specialized laboratories:
- In-vitro fertilization (IVF) research
- Andrology studies
- Cryopreservation techniques
Students will work directly with clinical experts in these lab environments, giving them practical experience alongside their academic studies. The facility also plans to host workshops and regional conferences on reproductive health topics.
Faculty members and fertility specialists will collaborate on research studies, medical publications, and educational programs. The lab is equipped with advanced embryological equipment designed for both research and training purposes.
Why does it matter?
Fertility rates in the UAE have been declining, following a global trend that has prompted increased investment in reproductive medicine research. The country's National Program for Happiness and Wellbeing has identified family planning support as a key priority.
"The establishment of the FertiClinic Reproductive Research Lab reflects our commitment to providing students and researchers with access to advanced facilities and experiential learning opportunities that bridge academic knowledge with real-world healthcare applications," said Professor Ghassan Aouad, ADU Chancellor.
For students, this means exposure to clinical research methods they wouldn't typically encounter in traditional academic settings. The partnership also aims to keep research aligned with current medical practice rather than purely theoretical work.
The context
This partnership reflects a broader push across the Middle East to develop local expertise in reproductive medicine. Many couples in the region currently travel abroad for advanced fertility treatments, creating both a healthcare gap and economic outflow.
Universities worldwide are increasingly forming partnerships with clinical providers to give students practical experience while advancing research. These collaborations help ensure that academic research addresses real medical challenges rather than existing in isolation.
The UAE has been investing heavily in healthcare infrastructure as part of its economic diversification strategy. Abu Dhabi University's move into reproductive medicine research aligns with the country's broader goals of becoming a regional hub for medical innovation and training.
