Abu Dhabi DoH taps Microsoft to integrate AI-powered technologies

The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to reshape the healthcare landscape in Abu Dhabi, focusing on innovative patient care and population health management. This partnership strengthens Abu Dhabi's position as a leader in digital health, using cutting-edge technology to empower a health-conscious society.

The DoH also signed MoUs with Accenture, Cognizant, e&, Philips and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP).

How will it work?

The agreement between the DoH and Microsoft is centered around integrating AI-powered tools to enhance healthcare services across multiple areas. Microsoft's AI Copilot and conversational AI advisors will play a pivotal role in streamlining patient care, disease research, and clinical trial predictions. The technology will also improve decision-making for ecosystem monitoring and compliance. The partnership prioritizes data security and privacy, while leveraging advanced AI to provide healthcare stakeholders with timely insights, enabling informed, data-driven decisions.

As Naim Yazbeck, General Manager of Microsoft UAE, noted: "AI has the potential to personalize care and equip healthcare professionals with powerful, data-driven insights."

This means AI will assist medical professionals in diagnosing conditions earlier, tailoring treatment plans, and optimizing healthcare research, ultimately transforming the entire patient experience.

We also have a few words to add about Philips, which is working with Abu Dhabi Health Data Services, the operator of Malaffi (Abu Dhabi Health Information Exchange). The two parties will develop the first-of-its-kind AI integration to detect abnormalities in radiological images across all scans in Abu Dhabi, enhancing diagnostic precision and decision-making.

"This collaboration streamlines physician workflows by minimizing manual image analysis and allows healthcare professionals to prioritize patient care and treatment planning," the announcement reads.

With Cognizant, the DoH will work to leverage AI-powered clinical insights for the betterment of patient care and healthcare delivery and improve healthcare outcomes for all community members. The two parties will seek to collaborate on developing cutting-edge solutions based on comprehensive clinical research, advanced technology, and data analytics and be seamlessly integrated into healthcare systems to enable tangible benefits for healthcare providers, patients, and stakeholders.

As for the deal with e& UAE, it will help enhance the connectivity of healthcare facilities through the newly launched Sahatna app. Specifically, e& UAE will support the application using SD-WAN technology solution, allowing the app to seamlessly connect with healthcare facilities across Abu Dhabi. As a result, this technology will further enhance information exchange between facilities and patients, ensuring users experience a smooth and efficient healthcare journey.

Lastly, by working with Accenture, DoH seeks to harness the power of technology and cutting-edge innovations to drive significant advancements in the healthcare sector — with an emphasis on Data Governance Execution, Health AI Use Case Advisory, and Health Data Infrastructure.

Why does it matter?

The integration of AI into healthcare is not just a technological upgrade; it represents a commitment to enhancing patient outcomes and advancing the field of medical research. By using AI, healthcare professionals can deliver more accurate diagnoses, speed up clinical trials, and make better regulatory decisions. This initiative also sets a new benchmark for intelligent healthcare systems, with early diagnosis and personalized care at the forefront of patient treatment.

Ibrahim Al Jallaf, Executive Director of Digital Health at DoH, highlighted the significance of this partnership: "By harnessing the full power of AI and data analytics, we are not just enhancing patient outcomes but reshaping the very fabric of our healthcare system."

This emphasis on leveraging technology to deliver better health outcomes makes Abu Dhabi a pioneering destination for healthcare innovation.

The context

The Department of Health's participation in GITEX Global Week 2024 showcases how AI and data analytics are being used to enhance healthcare delivery, improving both patient care and population health. The collaboration with Microsoft and other partners aligns with Abu Dhabi's broader digital transformation goals, demonstrating how technology can be integrated to improve health outcomes for both individuals and the wider community.

The solutions provided through this partnership will support three primary goals: revolutionizing patient care with AI, enhancing the efficiency of clinical trials and research, and improving decision-making for regulators. These advancements are expected to deliver high-quality health outcomes for Abu Dhabi's residents, further cementing the city's leadership role in intelligent healthcare.
