Abu Dhabi DoH, Ma’an launch the 2026 Healthcare Research and Innovation Fund

Abu Dhabi has recently opened the doors on the 2026 Healthcare Research and Innovation Fund, a major push to power real-world scientific breakthroughs right where patients live and breathe. This is not your run-of-the-mill call for papers. It's a targeted invitation to researchers, hospitals, innovators, and healthcare thinkers to tackle some of the toughest problems in medicine and public health.
At its core, the fund aims to back research that goes beyond lab curiosities into work that moves the needle on real clinical care and community wellbeing. It's about ideas that stand up, get tested, and change how we prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.
How does it work?
The setup is straightforward but strategic. Abu Dhabi's Department of Health - Abu Dhabi partners with the Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an to run this initiative.
Here's the playbook:
- The fund is open for submissions from researchers, clinicians, innovators, and institutions whose projects align with the Emirate's long-term health priorities.
- Priority topics include precision medicine, omics-based diagnostics, cancer research, metabolic and cardiovascular conditions, neurodegenerative diseases, mental health, reproductive endocrinology, and broad population health interventions.
- Project proposals are judged on scientific merit, feasibility, collaborative value, and relevance to regional health goals.
- The application portal is active now on the DoH website, and interested parties are urged to read the guidelines carefully before hitting submit.
This isn't just about throwing money at bright ideas. It's about seeds that grow into solutions, and partnerships that unlock impact.
Why does it matter?
In a world where medical progress can mean the difference between life and death, this fund is a game-changer. It reflects a clear shift from reactive care to research-led, evidence-based action.
Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Under-Secretary at the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, put it bluntly: "We reaffirm Abu Dhabi's steadfast commitment to enabling innovation and cutting-edge research that deliver measurable and lasting value for our community."
In plain speak, that means:
- Faster breakthroughs in how we detect and treat conditions like cancer and neurological diseases.
- Research that doesn't just sit on a shelf but winds up improving lives at scale.
- A growing pipeline of local research leadership and expertise that fuels a global healthcare ecosystem anchored in Abu Dhabi.
Past cycles of the fund drew more than 150 strong proposals, with 12 high-impact projects selected that advanced immunologic research and improved diagnostics for iron deficiency anaemia, among other achievements.
The context
Abu Dhabi isn't dipping its toe into the innovation stream. It's diving in headfirst. Over the past few years, the Emirate has stepped up its life sciences ambitions, building research infrastructure and collaborating across sectors to boost its global healthcare profile.
This research fund fits a larger tapestry of initiatives, including life sciences clusters, advanced clinical studies, and targeted funding to spur local innovation.
Abdullah Humaid Al Ameri, Director-General of the Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an said the program aims to "support DoH's efforts in empowering researchers and innovators who can contribute to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our future generations."
This is a strategy in motion, not just for Abu Dhabi's health system, but for its economy and scientific reputation. High-impact research creates a ripple effect. It attracts talent. It builds capacity. It draws investment. It plants Abu Dhabi squarely on the map as a hub for healthcare excellence.
