Abu Dhabi DoH, Ma’an award over AED 19 million to research and innovation projects

When it comes to innovation, Abu Dhabi is pulling out all the stops. In a partnership with the Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an, the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) has awarded over AED 19 million to visionary research and innovation projects. This funding aims to rewrite the script on healthcare with advancements in cutting-edge areas like cell and gene therapies, precision medicine, and advanced cancer treatments.
It's not just about progress; it's about transforming healthcare delivery and improving lives.
How does it work?
The grants are part of the DoH's Healthcare Research and Innovation Fund and were awarded to 11 forward-thinkers. These recipients include academics, healthcare pros, and trailblazing innovators under the wing of DoH's Research and Innovation Centre. Their projects? They're tackling some of the most critical challenges in healthcare today. Think precision treatments for inherited eye diseases, virtual reality for breast cancer survivors, and revolutionary approaches to managing chronic illnesses like pediatric metabolic health.
The initiative hit a high note during the inaugural DoH Research and Innovation Summit. Imagine this: 200 brilliant minds, from researchers to investors, buzzing with ideas and sharing insights. A keynote lecture on cell and gene therapy by Prof. Waseem Qasim of University College London — a giant in gene editing and stem cell research — set the stage. Panel discussions dove deep into the UAE's research ecosystem, spotlighting both opportunities and hurdles in clinical trials. The result? A vibrant hub for collaboration.
Why does it matter?
These grants are doing more than just funding; they're laying the groundwork for solutions that touch real lives.
Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, a leader at DoH, said it best: "Research funding is the foundation of progress, enabling innovators to turn ideas into life-changing solutions."
Moreover, this isn't just a local initiative — by supporting these projects, Abu Dhabi is cementing its place as a global leader in healthcare innovation.
The projects' scope speaks volumes. Whether it's advancing cancer treatments or using tech to enhance chronic disease management, the focus is clear: better care, better outcomes, and a better future. The involvement of the Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an ensures that the impact resonates across public, private, and community sectors.
The context
Abu Dhabi's commitment to healthcare isn't happening in a vacuum. It's part of a bigger picture — a strategy to use science, technology, and community partnerships to address global healthcare challenges. The inaugural Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week 2024 showcased this vision. It was a moment to celebrate collaboration, innovation, and shared goals.
The grants are also a testament to Abu Dhabi's resilience and foresight. His Excellency Faisal Alhmoudi from Ma'an summed it up perfectly: "These grants will enhance the sector and play a key role in advancing healthcare for the entire community."
By investing in research and nurturing partnerships, Abu Dhabi is creating a healthcare ecosystem that's prepared for today and primed for tomorrow.
