Qatar surgeons perform first hip replacement using muscle-sparing technique

Qatar's Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has completed the country's first total hip replacement using the Direct Superior Approach, a minimally invasive technique that preserves surrounding muscles during surgery.

The procedure was performed on an American woman in her sixties who chose Qatar over the United States for her treatment. She suffered from advanced hip osteoarthritis that caused chronic pain and mobility issues. The patient walked without crutches immediately after surgery, was discharged within two days, and returned to swimming within one month.

How did it work?

The Direct Superior Approach (DSA) differs significantly from traditional hip replacement methods. Dr. Mohamed Mubarak Al Ateeq Al Dosari, Senior Consultant in Orthopedic and Joint Surgery at HMC, led the surgical team.

The technique works by:

  • Using a small incision of just 6 to 10 centimeters
  • Avoiding cuts to primary stabilizing muscles
  • Gently separating gluteus maximus muscle fibers instead of cutting through them
  • Preserving most external rotator muscles that support joint stability

"This minimally invasive method focuses on preserving surrounding muscles and soft tissues, which helps reduce muscle damage and supports earlier recovery and restoration of mobility," Dr. Al Dosari said.

Why does it matter?

The muscle-sparing approach offers significant benefits over traditional hip replacement surgery. Patients experience less postoperative pain and recover much faster because their muscles remain intact.

The technique also positions Qatar as a destination for medical tourism. The American patient's choice to travel to Qatar instead of having surgery in the US demonstrates the growing reputation of Qatari medical expertise.

"The surgery reflects the capability of Qatari medical expertise to provide advanced surgical treatments that attract patients from around the world," Dr. Al Dosari noted.

The context

Hip replacement surgery has traditionally required large incisions and cutting through major muscle groups to access the joint. This causes significant tissue damage, leading to longer recovery times, more pain, and extended hospital stays.

The Direct Superior Approach represents a shift toward less invasive orthopedic procedures that prioritize tissue preservation. While the technique exists elsewhere, Qatar's adoption shows the country's healthcare system keeping pace with global surgical advances.

This milestone supports Qatar's broader healthcare strategy as outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to establish the country as a regional medical hub. HMC's ability to attract international patients for complex procedures demonstrates progress toward this goal.
