Dubai launches longevity authority with Crown Prince’s approval of inaugural strategy

Dubai has never been shy about setting ambitious targets. But extending the healthy human lifespan as a matter of government policy is a different order of ambition entirely. That is now the direction of travel, following the approval of the Dubai Longevity Authority's strategy and operating budget by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.
What's the news?
Sheikh Hamdan approved the Dubai Longevity Authority's strategy and operating budget at the body's inaugural board meeting, formally activating the institution and signalling that longevity is now a funded government priority in Dubai, not simply a concept on paper. The DLA is tasked with positioning Dubai as a leading destination for longevity research, investment, and clinical innovation. Its mandate covers everything from preventive medicine and biotech to the regulatory environment needed to attract global players in the life-extension sector.
Why does it matter?
Longevity is one of the fastest-growing areas in global healthcare investment. Billionaire-backed research programmes, biotech startups, and academic institutions are racing to translate advances in genomics, AI-driven diagnostics, and cellular biology into practical interventions that extend healthy life. Until now, the dominant hubs have been the United States and parts of East Asia. Dubai is making a deliberate move to compete for that capital, talent, and scientific activity.
For the GCC more broadly, the stakes are real. Ageing populations, rising rates of chronic disease, and significant public healthcare expenditure are shared challenges across the region. A dedicated authority with a clear budget and political backing gives Dubai the institutional infrastructure to act, rather than simply participate in global conversations about longevity. It also fits cleanly within the UAE's wider health agenda, which has consistently prioritised prevention, early intervention, and the use of data and technology to improve population outcomes.
The context
The Dubai Longevity Authority does not exist in isolation. It sits within a broader pattern of UAE health institution-building that includes the establishment of the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, significant investment in health data infrastructure, and ongoing work under the UAE's National Strategy for Wellbeing. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 has placed similar emphasis on preventive health and health system reform, meaning the two largest economies in the GCC are now both channelling resources into the future of healthcare.
What distinguishes the DLA is its specific focus on longevity as a scientific and commercial category. This is not a general public health body. It is designed to attract a particular kind of institution, researcher, and investor. The approval of its strategy by Sheikh Hamdan at the first board meeting suggests the authority has moved quickly from concept to operational readiness. The real measure of its ambition will come in the partnerships, regulations, and research outputs it generates over the next few years.
