inDrive and Vezeeta join forces to bring subsidised healthcare to Egypt’s ride-hailing drivers

Egypt's gig economy workers have long fallen into a gap: too busy to prioritise their health, and often too cost-constrained to act on it. A new partnership between inDrive and Vezeeta is a direct attempt to close that gap, at least for the thousands of drivers who use the inDrive platform daily across Egypt.
The two companies announced a strategic agreement that gives inDrive drivers access to Vezeeta's "Shamel" programme, an annual healthcare subscription that offers discounts of up to 80% on medical services. The deal is not a generic corporate wellness gesture. It is structured around inDrive's existing driver loyalty tiers, which means the benefits are calibrated to reward engagement with the platform.
How will it work?
Drivers at the top of inDrive's loyalty structure, classified as "Legendary" drivers, will receive complimentary Shamel subscriptions. All other inDrive drivers, and their families, are eligible for a 25% discount on Shamel subscriptions. The Shamel programme itself has no age restrictions, no exclusions for chronic conditions, and no caps on how many times a subscriber can access services throughout the year. There is also no requirement for prior authorisation, which removes one of the most common friction points in healthcare access.
Through the Vezeeta app, subscribers can:
- Book doctor consultations
- Order pharmacy products
- Schedule phone-based follow-up appointments
- Request home visits from doctors
- Book laboratory tests and radiology services
Alaa El-Din Shalaby, General Manager of inDrive Egypt, described the move as a natural extension of the company's commitment to its driver community. "Our drivers are the driving force behind everything we do," he said, "and supporting their health and well-being is among our top priorities."
Why does it matter?
Gig and platform workers across the Arab world are a growing labour segment, but they rarely enjoy the occupational health benefits that come with formal employment. No employer-sponsored insurance. No sick leave. And in many cases, deferred medical care because the cost and time commitment feels unmanageable.
This partnership does not solve that structural problem. But it does make a practical difference. A driver who can book a specialist consultation at 80% off, without navigating insurance paperwork, is more likely to actually seek care. And that matters at scale. inDrive operates in more than 1,200 cities across 48 countries, and its app has been downloaded over 400 million times, making it the second most downloaded smart mobility application globally.
Dr. Ola Ali El-Din, Chief Operating Officer at Vezeeta, said the deal fits the company's broader strategy of building partnerships with organisations that share a genuine interest in expanding healthcare access. "inDrive was one of the key companies where we saw a strong commitment to providing better healthcare solutions for its drivers," she said.
The context
Vezeeta is one of the region's most established health-tech platforms, operating across the Middle East and Africa with a network of more than 30,000 healthcare providers. The Shamel subscription model reflects a wider shift in how digital health platforms are approaching affordability. Rather than relying solely on insurance integration, subscription-based access is emerging as a parallel route to making routine care financially manageable.
In Egypt specifically, where out-of-pocket healthcare spending remains significant, that approach carries real weight. The government's own health coverage reforms under Egypt Vision 2030 have made progress, but private-sector initiatives that extend affordable care to informal and semi-formal workers are filling gaps that public programmes have not yet reached. Partnerships like this one, anchored in existing digital platforms with large user bases, may prove to be one of the more efficient ways to move the needle on population health access in the near term.
